Road Trips In Australia

Australia's longest straightAustralia is possibly one of the most visited countries by British individuals. With its close relationship with the UK almost as many Australian nationals flock to Britain as Brits go there, resulting in holidays to the nation to be a natural right of passage for many younger individuals. In addition, the 18-30’s working visa makes it incredibly easy for people to take a few months, or even years, off from daily life and head Down Under for work and leisure. And with many of world’s most iconic landmarks such as the Sydney Opera House, Great Barrier Reef and Uluru, Australia is certainly a popular nation to explore.

One thing that you may not realise before you go to Australia is that this country is vast. Whilst it is obviously larger than Great Britain, Australia’s size often shocks people when they arrive and they realise the extent of its greatness. Travelling around the country is not as easy as simply hopping from one city to the next as there are huge distances between each metropolis. And if you don’t want to constantly be checking into airport lounges and taking to the air, road trips are a great way to explore this magnificent continent.

Rental cars are a fantastic way to explore and get around Australia as they give you the freedom to go where you want, when you want. Without the pressure of having to catch flights and make sure you’re checked in at the right time, this means that holidays can be much more relaxed and stress free. However, as with any holiday, it is important that you spend some time planning or you could run into trouble. On obvious matter, but one which may be overlooked for Australian road tips, is that of petrol. You need to plan your route, work out mileage and take the necessary steps to ensure you have enough petrol. There can be hundreds of miles between cities and townships and should you run out of petrol you could be waiting a long time for help. Always ensure that you have a petrol can with you on your journeys as a backup if you need it, and plan your long distance journeys in advance, ensuring that you find key areas which you can detour to for refuelling if necessary.

Another important factor to take into consideration is accommodation. Whilst road trips give you the flexibility to travel wherever you want to go, if can also mean that you don’t pay as much attention to accommodation options as you simply decide you’ll find something en-route. However, again because of vast distances between townships, you may not find places to stay easily once you hit the outback, so try and check ahead to find suitable locations. Whilst it may be easy to rough it in the car for a few nights it won’t be that comfortable, especially if you’re travelling with friends, so using guides and locals to find places to stay is paramount.

Australia road trips can be an exciting journey and a fantastic way to explore the country. Rather than spending huge amounts of time flying between exotic locations you can take to the roads and watch as the scenery changes around you, making your holiday even better than you believed it could be.
