Prague city is full of things to do and see making it an ideal location for a romantic city break, a weekend getaway or short holiday with friends or your family. Read more about the Czech Reublic and it's capital city, Prague.

Many Brits will be thinking about a European city break as the weather begins to warm up, and the Czech Republic is a country that many will turn to. By staying in Prague, holidaymakers can bask in the glory of one of the continent’s most fascinating cities, and one that boasts thousands of years of history.

What is so special about the Czech capital?

Well, despite its origins stretching back some 1,100 years, it is only since the 1980s and the early 1990s and the collapse of communism that brought Prague within easy reach. Since then, the city has established itself as one of the world’s leading city break destinations – 4.1 million people travelled there last year – the vast majority of whom stayed in Prague hotels.

The advent of cheap flights carriers has also made getting to Prague easier, and airlines serving the Czech capital operate from a number of regional airports including East Midlands, Norwich and Cardiff. With the city just a few hours away, it’s easy to see why it has become so popular among Brits – from groups on stag weekends to couples; Prague has proven to have something for everyone.

Its nightlife has clearly been a huge draw. The promise of cheap, world-class Czech beer is a good enough reason to visit Prague in itself for a number of people, and the table service you receive in bars and restaurants means no long queues at the bar. There is a bar or club in the Czech capital to suit every taste – whether you’re a serious clubber or someone who likes to dance to some cheesy classics.

Eating out in Prague

Don’t head straight out drinking though – you wouldn’t want to miss Prague’s super restaurants, would you? To many, the capital is known as ‘the city of a hundred spires’, but to the gastronomes among us it is also known as ‘the city of a thousand restaurants’.

Menus in Prague’s eateries are usually provided in Czech, English and German, and the country as a whole takes special pride in its meat dishes. Pork is arguably the most popular meat, closely followed by chicken and beef. Due to the country’s landlocked position, you probably won’t be surprised to learn that fish is something of a rarity – although fresh trout and carp is widely available if you stay in hotels in Prague during Christmas.

One of the most popular elements of Czech cuisine is knedliky, which consists of boiled and sliced dumplings. Wheat or potato-based, these are often served with meals in Prague restaurants. When you find an eatery that takes your fancy, perhaps try roast pork with dumplings and Sauerkraut or marinated beef sirloin, both of which are widely available.

Sightseeing & Attractions

While that’s your evening out sorted, what are you going to do during the day? Well, you certainly won’t be stuck for choices. Much of Prague’s capital is on UNESCO’s list of World Heritage Sites, and there are two iconic landmarks that immediately spring to mind – one of which is the grand, imposing Prague Castle.

Arguably the most important structure in the history of the Czech Republic, Prague’s castle dominates the city’s skyline. It is certainly a sight to be behold – according to the Guinness Book of Records, it is the largest ancient castle in the world at 570 metres long and approximately 130 metres wide. Over the years Roman Emperors, Kings of Bohemia and presidents of both Czechoslovakia and the Czech Republic have all resided here, with the castle’s history dating right the way back to the ninth century.

Boasting just about every architectural style of the last millennium, the castle certainly isn’t a stand-alone building. Within its walls are the Gothic St Vitrus’s Cathedral, the medieval cottages of Golden Lane and the much-visited National Gallery collection of Bohemian baroque and mannerism art. Due to the castle’s size, visitors are recommended to devote at least half a day to exploring it and, for a fuller picture of its history, you can visit the nearby Old Royal Palace, home of the permanent Story of Prague Castle Exhibition.

If the castle is Prague’s most famous structure, then Charles Bridge most come a pretty close second. Despite being only a fraction of the size, the bridge, which crosses the River Vltava, is well known among tourists around the world. What makes it so famous? Well, between the beginning of the 15th century and as recently as 1841, it was the most important river crossing in the Czech capital. Resting on 16 arches, the bridge is flanked by two impressive towers, and the one located on the Old Town side is widely regarded as one of the world’s finest examples of civil gothic-style buildings.

Charles Bridge is adorned with baroque statues along each of sides, and the most famous is that of St John of Nepomuk, a celebrated local martyr who was thrown to his death from the bridge during reign of Wenceslas IV. The bridge differs greatly depending on when you visit. If you go during the day, for example, the likelihood is that you’ll have to share it with large number of other tourists.

Making Prague your next City Break

While you may have to sacrifice some personal space, you can be sure of an excellent atmosphere, with the bridge also being occupied by street entertainers and local artists. It’s always nice to sit down and watch a master at work, and some of the best come out as the sun begins its descent. This is arguably the best time to visit Charles Bridge and certainly when it looks its most romantic – and whether or not you can make the most of it will depend on who you’ve travelled to Prague with!

With a range of Prague hotels to choose from and an all-encompassing nightlife to enjoy, not to mention a wealth of historic and cultural attractions, the Czech capital really does have something for everyone. When will you organise a visit to see the city in all its glory for yourself?

Visiting Bangkok is not always as cheap as people talk about, however there are still things you can save your money on to make Bangkok a cheap and interesting travel destination, read our guest post to find out more.

This travel guide has been provided by Netflights who sell cheap flights to Bangkok as well as a large volume of other international destinations

Bangkok, Thailand’s capital city is a very popular holiday destination, so it’s no surprise that it’s constantly populated with tourists from all over the world. If you’re on a tight budget then have no fear, Bangkok has plenty to offer you.

Bangkok has a rich history, and has several sites that you should visit during your stay. The temple of Wat Pho is the largest in the city, and houses the reclining Buddha. Other temples include Wat Arun and Wat Suthat, where The Giant Swing can be found. Visitors are welcome to visit and explore these temples. In addition, the Grand Palace is also worth a visit. The palace was originally the official residence of the King of Thailand, and also houses a temple called Wat Phra Kaew, which contains the Emerald Buddha. Entrances to the temples are relatively cheap; prices are in the region of 50-350 Baht (£1-£7).

If you want to experience magnificent views of the city, take a trip to Golden Mount. Before skyscrapers arrived at the end of the last century, this was the highest point in Bangkok, and is well worth a visit. Admission is only 50 Baht (£1).

One of the most popular tourist attractions is The Jim Thompson House Museum, a compound of traditional Thai houses collected by an American businessman between the 1950s and 60s. Entrance to the museum is only 50 Baht (£1). If you want to delve deeper into Bangkok’s history, the Ancient City also comes highly recommended. Although it’s an hour south of the city, this open-air museum includes perfect replicas of Thailand’s historic monuments, and entrance is only 300 Baht (£6).

Bangkok is also well-known for its floating markets. Tourists can take a long-tail boat ride through the Damnoen Saduak Floating Market, to experience the traditional buying and selling of fresh food on the water. Tours vary depending on the size of your party; if you’re travelling alone you’ll have to fork out around £80, but parties of 12 will be approximately £30. You might also want to consider a trip along the Thon Buri canals. It’s a great way to avoid the hectic Bangkok traffic, and also admire the major sites of the city. Prices are slightly cheaper at around 1000 Baht (£20) per person.

If you’re looking for some retail therapy, visit the Chatuchak weekend market. Situated in the centre of busy Bangkok, you’re bound to find plenty of bargains amongst the market’s 5,000 stalls. Be prepared to spend the whole day there as there’s so much to see and buy, from handicrafts and souvenirs to great second-hand clothing.

If you’re travelling through Bangkok, you have to spend at least one night on Khao San Road. The area is jam-packed with bars, restaurants, nightclubs and clothing stalls. Whatever your budget, Khao San Road, also known as the ‘backpacker’s paradise’, is a great place to find affordable hotels and hostels. Prices range from 150-1500 Baht per night (£3-£30).

Staying in Bangkok also gives you the chance to experience both international and Thai cuisine. Venture into Chinatown and taste some of the most authentic Chinese food in Thailand. Try a wide selection of seafood dishes at Lao Li Shark Fin and T&K Seafood. If you’re in the mood to sample the local cuisine, head to Sukhumvit Road for some good value food at Lemon Grass, or some tapas-style bites at The Barbican on Silom Road.

Read why Limassol in Cyprus is an ideal location for a holiday and learn reasons why this city in cyprus is special

If you’re looking for the ultimate in Mediterranean luxury, Limassol is the place for you. The city is located on Akrotiri Bay, on Cyprus’s southern coast, and was built between two ancient cities, Amathus and Kourion. Its stunning backdrop is courtesy of the Troodos Mountains. There are lots of things to see and do during your stay in this beautiful city, from museums and archaeological sites, to relaxing spas and picturesque beaches.

There are a number of luxurious beach hotels in the Limassol area, with spectacular views of Limassol’s clear blue waters. The Four Seasons Hotel, situated on its own sandy beach, includes a spa, indoor and outdoor fitness facilities, Jacuzzis, and restaurants and bars. If you happen to be travelling with children, the hotel has kids and teenage clubs, and also provides babysitting services. The Amathus Beach Hotel, located just east of the Four Seasons, is fully equipped with a spa, boutiques, a kids club, a sports centre, and its own restaurants and bars. In addition the Londa Hotel also comes highly recommended, having been refurbished and reopened in 2005. Nightly rates for these hotels start at roughly £160 per person/night.

Limassol not only has great accommodation, but its local restaurants are also praised. In particular, the Terra e Mare Restaurant on Amathountos Avenue comes very highly recommended. It prides itself on a classic modern menu and a delicious wine list. Its signature dishes include Beef Fillet mignons in a creamy mushroom sauce, and Grilled Pork fillets garnished with Halloumi cheese, at a price of only 30 Euros per dish.

If you’re in Limassol around Easter time, you’ll be just in time for the Limassol Carnival. The festival takes place during the 10 days proceeding Lent (according to the Greek Orthodox calendar), and consists of three main parades. The final parade is the largest, and involves hundreds of people walking in costume alone the town’s longest avenue.

However, if you spend time in Limassol during the autumn season, you can sample thirst-quenching wines at the Limassol Wine Festival. It takes place towards the end of August/beginning of September.

There is a multitude of things to visit and enjoy in Limassol. It is well-known for its beautiful beaches, and in particular Dhassoudi Beach. It’s a public beach just east of the city centre, and there are many sports facilities in the complex, including a swimming pool and tennis courts. Furthermore, there are also a number of excellent historical sites to visit. These sites include; the Curium Amphitheatre (Kourion) theatre that houses some spectacular ancient mosaics, the international Limassol Sculpture, and a number of popular museums, which offer a wide spectrum of beautiful local and ancient artwork.

The city of Limassol has many historical and modern aspects to it, which altogether makes for an enjoyable and memorable experience.

Acludia is one of Spains infamous destinations for family holidays due to its location, things to do there, places of interest and a variety of other pull factors. Read more to learn more about Alcudia

Over the last 20 years Alcudia has become synonymous with value for money family holidays in Spain. Unlike the south of Majorca which is home to mega resorts like Palma Nova and Magaluf, the north of Majorca has still managed to retain most of its charm and remains to a point largely unspoilt.

Getting To Alcudia

Alcudia is 54km from Palma, the easiest way to get there is to hire a car which you can pickup from Palma airport. However if you are booking a holiday to the resort through a tour operator your airport transfers will be included within the price of the holiday. Transfer times will vary depending on the number of stops the transfer bus needs to make, but you are generally looking at around one – two hours door to door.

Alcudia Old Town

The old town of Alcudia is an excellent example of a traditional Majorcan town with narrow cobbles streets and cafe lined squares where you can sit and watch the world go by.

Alcudia was once home to the Phoenician and Greek’s and then reached it’s crescendo in the 2nd century when the Romans made it their capital ‘Pollentia’. The town was destroyed in the 6th century and returned to its former glory by the Moors who build ‘the town on the hill’ aka al-kudia. Today one of the most striking things about the old town are the walls enclosing it which were built in the 14th century.

Alcudia Beach

The beach is one of the main reasons that Alcudia is so popular with families. Miles of flat sand and shallow water make this an ideal spot for sunbathing and swimming. For the more adventurous there is a wide range of water sports available too.

Alcudia Port

The port of Alcudia is a real gem of a spot in the resort. Focused around Passeig Maritim (the walkway running parallel to the port) there is a wide range of shops, bars and restaurants. And if you fancy a stroll after lunch walk across to the marina where you gawp at some of the luxury yachts moored there.

Things To Do

Alcudia is primarily a family destination with plenty to do for your children. The main waterpark is the hidropark which has a wide range of pools and flumes to keep you entertained for the day.

Albufera wetlands are very near Alcudia which are a protected nature reserve that is home to over 80% of the Balearics bird species and 400 plant species.

Virtually every aparthotel in the resort has a kids club, great swimming pools and evening entertainment for all the family, so you are guaranteed a good time whereever you stay in the town.

Places to Stay

Alcudia offers a range of accommodation to suit virtually every taste. Looking for something traditional and romantic? Then there are a range of small hotels in the old town.

If you are looking for an all inclusive holiday then the Hotel Bellevue and Club Mac complex offer great value holiday deals.

And for everything else there are an abundance of great value hotels and apartments the length of the beach area that can be booked independently or through a tour operator.

Feeling daunted yet excited at the prospect of travelling to Australia for my first backpacking experience, my expectations were different from the reality I faced. Read about my first night in Sydney, Australia.

On the plane to Australia developing square eyes staring at the TV monitor on back of the seat in front of me dreaming about what awaits me down under, I am feeling an entire list of emotions: anxiety, excitement; optimism; happiness and nervousness. After all, it was my first trip abroad and I had bought a one way ticket and wasn’t planning on returning for a year. I had no idea what to expect but was excited at the prospect.

With no accommodation planned on arrival I had dreamt about jumping on the back of a kangaroo and riding into town and finding the nearest and safest hostel to Sydney city centre

With no accommodation planned on arrival I had dreamt about jumping on the back of a kangaroo and riding into town and finding the nearest and safest hostel to Sydney city centre. In reality, I jumped into the back of taxi and headed to a suburb north of Sydney.

After handing over the money to the taxi driver I suddenly felt out of my depth and comfort zone. Faced with a hoard of drunken Aussies and homeless aborigines I gulped at the prospect of walking past them to reach the little hostel that lay in wait a little beyond them. I found this hostel online prior to departing but heard it wasn’t necessary to book. I had hoped for a nice single room with a view of the city. No luck, all singles were taken, instead I got lumped with an 8 bedroom dorm which looked as if it had been ransacked and with pants and socks strewn about the place it looked like one giant sock drawer. And instead of a view overlooking the city I was faced with a window overlooking the drunken street people. Welcome to Australia!

It was fair to say I didn’t sleep a wink my first night, my expectations of how my first night would be were far from the reality I faced, but nevertheless, I was excited about the adventure and couldn’t wait to wake up the next morning to start exploring.

Read an overview of what makes Malaga city in Spain a special place for tourists to visit. Read about sightseeing in Malaga, excursions from Malaga and getting around the city all in one useful travel guide.

Welcome to Malaga

Getting a deep sense of the culture and atmosphere of Spain may feel difficult in the bustle and chaos of big cities such as Madrid and Barcelona, but the country is not without options for relaxing and taking in the local scene at the same time. Located along the Mediterranean coast and famous for its status as the birthplace of the artist Picasso, Malaga is a Spanish city that affords visitors incredible views, intimate looks at national and regional culture, and a chance to enjoy a holiday that’s as easy and comfortable as it is exciting. Malaga is home to scores of examples of national architecture styles and also boasts some buildings influenced by other cultures. There are also tempting tapas dishes to try, engaging music to discover, and many new experiences to gather throughout the city’s charming streets. To truly enjoy a trip to Malaga, travelers should be well-prepared and have a basic idea of how they’d like to spend their time, though the city makes it fairly easy to simply drop in and enjoy oneself.

A city with seemingly endless attractions for travelers interested in getting to know Spain without getting lost in the tangle of its largest destinations …

Getting Around

As a fairly small city, Malaga can largely be navigated by foot, though spending a few days in the town is likely to require the occasional transport. The local bus system has a reputation for being somewhat slow, but is marked by low prices and isn’t too difficult for travelers to grasp in terms of complexity. Train service in and around Malaga is excellent, with moderate rates, and can carry travelers between Malaga and other major cities swiftly and comfortably. Though many travelers may opt to take the occasional taxi, rides longer than a few minutes can quickly add up to costly expenses, with a typical ride from the nearby airport averaging twenty Euro. Taxis can be difficult to find in Malaga, and carrying around a number for a local service is a good idea, especially as queues can be considerably long at taxi stations during the warmer months. Having an idea of personal preference for getting around in Malaga before arriving can make navigation easier and more pleasant.

Sightseeing in Malaga

Sightseeing in Malaga is often as easy as stepping out of one’s hotel and wandering around the town, though there are many specific stops to catch on any journey. The Picasso Museum in the center of town is especially popular for its exclusive showings of works by the famous artist and its wealth of information about his style and legacy. Admission is just under ten Euro, making it an easily affordable part of any Malaga tour. The Catedral de Malaga is a popular sight when traveling through the city, though going inside is worth the three to four Euro charged for a glimpse of the interior’s impressive detailing and artwork. The Plaza de Toros, which serves as the city’s bullring, may be an exciting option for some travelers, though events vary throughout the year and should be checked before arriving if seeing a bullfight is a must-do item on a personal itinerary. On the outskirts of town, the Castillo de Gibralfaro is a Moorish castle that merits an up-close look.

Malaga Excursions

Though Malaga can easily captivate travelers for weeks at a time, taking the occasional excursion to a nearby site or attraction can make a visit especially memorable. The Alhambra Palace in Granada offers exceptional views of local architecture and design, and the city of Granada itself can make for a fun and relaxing detour. Visiting Gibraltar is an especially popular choice, and can weave in plenty of surf and sea into the fabric of a Malaga trip. Landing on the rock, travelers can roam around as they take in the beauty of the landscape and may also catch site of the Barbary apes that make their homes in the area. Throughout rural Andalucia, natural gems await appreciative eyes; excursions to the El Chorro gorge or to the El Torcal national park can be especially rewarding.

A city with seemingly endless attractions for travelers interested in getting to know Spain without getting lost in the tangle of its largest destinations, Malaga is all sensory luxury. From days spent lounging on the coast to afternoons of traversing the streets, travelers are sure to find a great richness of experience in Malaga.

The Algarve is Portugal’s main tourist regions and makes an ideal location for a family holiday. With the sun, sea and sand attracting many families to the Shores of the Algarve it is easy to understand why the Algarve in Portugal is a popular destination for a peaceful holiday with your family, and your golf clubs. Yes don’t forget to take your golf clubs as you will be able to get more than a few rounds of golf in while you are there, even if you are with the family.

Why choose the Algarve?

The Algarve region in Portugal has a number of golf courses that are maintained to an impeccable condition.

Car Hire

featured

Car hire is great for making a holiday a memorable experience, however make the holiday memorable for the right reasons and not the wrong ones, read this article to find out some common mistakes when hiring a car.

In most instances, choosing car hire for a holiday leads to greater peace of mind and a sense of full control over the trip, but as with anything in life, car hire can take a foul turn when approached from a bad angle. Preparing properly for car hire is an important part of ensuring that the experience is enjoyable and lends a positive quality to the holiday, and part of the preparation process is taking care to avoid the most common mistakes. Even when common sense is applied to hiring a car, a bit of inattention or neglecting to ask a key question can result in potentially frustrating –or even embarrassing– situations for drivers. By keeping these frequent mistakes in mind, travelers can save themselves a fair amount of hassle and enjoy car hire for the fun and helpful service it’s intended to be.

a bit of inattention or neglecting to ask a key question can result in potentially frustrating –or even embarrassing– situations for drivers

What type of fuel should I use?

With so many variables for modern vehicles in terms of petrol type and tank location, it’s not too surprising that some of the most common car hire mistakes revolve around fueling. Though it’s easy to assume a given car will take the same type of fuel one would use for their own vehicle at home, it’s best to ask the car hire company in advance when not absolutely sure of the right type. Using the wrong type of fuel may lead to performance issues with the vehicle, and rectifying the matter can quickly become very expensive.

Where the %@#! is the fuel tank?

Knowing which side of the car is home to the fuel tank input is also imperative before taking a rental out on the road. Indecision at the pump and the necessity of turning the vehicle around if the wrong choice is made can add many minutes to a fuel stop, and may cause unwanted attention from staff and other patrons. Taking a few minutes to note these important aspects of the vehicle’s fuel system can keep such unwanted experiences at bay and avoid an unnecessary red face.

What side of the road should I drive on?

We’ve all driven the wrong way down a one way street at some time, but driving on the wrong side of the road on a busy motorway is something a little more serious. Incidents where people have taken the wrong exit to join oncoming traffic are not unheard of and this can lead to a serious accident. Even if you are lucky enough to avoid any scrapes, you will still be left feeling like an idiot after doing it. Always check which side of the road you should be driving, and if the steering wheel is on the other side of the car from your car at home, then you are going to have to drive on the opposite side of the road.

What car do I need?

Variety is also an element of a common car hire mistake that people make as regards the size and type of vehicle. When selecting a vehicle type, such as a sedan, sports car, van, or SUV, car hire clients opt for the least expensive option or for the sort of car they’re used to driving, without first considering the requirements of their luggage or travel group size. Though some car hire companies are able to accommodate clients with car changes on the spot, many operate busy lots and may not have a more suitable model available on arrival, or may charge an exorbitant fee for the exchange. Ensuring that the vehicle selected has proper trunk space for luggage and has enough seats for everyone enjoying the holiday is a crucial step.

Taking care to avoid these typical mistakes may seem like a small matter, but travelers who heed the lessons of those who have experienced chaotic holidays before them will find that keeping these pitfalls in mind can make for a less stressful trip.

One way car hire is ideal for many reasons, it is very convenient and helpful for people who wish to travel to a destination with no intentions of returning to the same location. Read why one way car hire makes an ideal opportunity for a road trip in the USA.

Advantages of one way car hire

Some people may dream of holidays that involve long hotel stays or languid days spent hanging out at a pool or beach, but for others, the fast pace and limitless opportunities of a road trip are ideal. The United States has long been one of the most beloved countries visited by road trip enthusiasts. Boasting climates, natural features, and cities that span an incredible spectrum, the US can set the stage for an unforgettable road trip that can quickly create a great diversity of memories. Car hire for a road trip is by far the most popular and the easiest way to enjoy this unique type of holiday, and matching a car with personal preferences can be an enjoyable first step towards the vacation of a lifetime.

The powerful feeling of freedom afforded by car hire is a great asset for any holiday, but it is absolutely essential when planning on a road trip. Whether traveling coast to coast, staying central to a specific region, tracing history along Route 66 or another historic highway, or simply letting fate decide how one gets from the pick-up point to the drop-off station, having a vehicle at one’s disposal means travelers will never have to wait around for a bus or be corralled to set destinations with a touring agency. Feeling the wind and taking in the sunshine in a dream convertible or enjoying a comfortable ride in a modern sedan, travelers on a road trip can experience a holiday like no other when they take advantage of the endless possibilities of car hire.

As the excitement of a road trip catches on and greater numbers of travelers consider this fun option for sight-seeing and visiting all the top cities on one’s list, care hire companies are developing more convenient and easy-to-use options for one-way hire service. Most agencies allow for picking the vehicle up at a given location and dropping it off at another without any penalty fees, and many operate extensive networks that ensure the last stop on a road trip is likely home to a drop-off point. Some agencies may even offer special discounts for bringing the car back to a specific location; checking into such possibilities at the point of booking can help travelers save money on their trip.

Leaving the tourist traps to others and taking to the road in a hired car is sure to help build a holiday that goes beyond the usual activities and takes on an extraordinary character that will be cherished for a lifetime. Discovering the many beautiful natural areas, exciting metropolitan cities, charming country towns, and little-known highlights strewn throughout the United States in a hired car is an experience unlike any other, and can transform a simple holiday into one that packs in all of a traveler’s favorite sights and activities. When vacation time calls, considering a road trip with car hire is bound to make any break better.
